What now?

Disregarding America’s strong tradition of defending human rights, the President made bad policy bad law on October 17th when he signed the “Military Commissions Act of 2006.”  The new law allows the administration to detain people without charge or without trial, and to withhold legal recourse for anyone labeled an enemy combatant. So what are we doing about it?

We’re launching an intensive campaign to restore our traditional American values of justice, rule of law, and human dignity. Over the coming months, Amnesty International will promote specific actions that are strategically chosen to make the biggest impact.  Some of what’s coming up includes:

March:

  • Host a house party to screen "Road to Guantanamo" or join a house party already in your area.

April:

  • Join Amnesty International during our membership drive and stand with the 2.2 million members globally who are fighting for an America that leads the world on human rights.

June:

  • Stay tuned for a new online campaign that will launch in June.
